Weekly Athletics Write-Up 9/16/14

Girls Varsity Soccer – 

The Girls Varsity Soccer team began the season with a solid win over Portsmouth Abbey, 2-0. Playing in soaking rain for the duration of the game, the girls controlled the play throughout. They finally broke through in the second half on a beautiful free kick by freshman Tess Huckaby. A few minutes later, Huckaby netted another free kick, bending her shot around the wall and safely into the upper 90. This week the team faces perennial EIL contenders Pingree and LCA.

Boys Varsity Soccer –

The Boys Varsity Soccer team, had a solid week with two victories. On Wednesday, they traveled to Landmark and came away with a 6-1 win. Alex Zecca ’15 tallied three times to lead all scorers. On Saturday, the boys battled hard against a talented Brooks School team. The Beaver boys came through with a big 3-1 win over their ISL opponent. Alex Zecca scored twice and Max Cottrell ’16 netted the third. This week the boys are very busy with three games – Home vs. Rivers on Wednesday, Home vs. LCA on Friday, and away vs. Milbrook at the Westminster School on Sunday.

Varsity Golf –

The Varsity Golf Team had a great week to start the 2014 season with a close win over Landmark last Wednesday winning 4 – 2.  Hudson Roddy ’18 won his season debut with the program playing at the number one position shooting a 46 in the 9 hole match. Captain Zach Rosenberg ’15 played at the number 2 position and won his match as well.  Jacob Florence ’19 played at the number 3 spot and also won his debut in the program, shooting the lowest round of the day with a 44.  Zach Weiss ’17 won his season debut at the five spot. The team has two very tough matches this week hosting Pingree on Monday and travelling down to Portsmouth Abbey on Saturday.

Varsity Field Hockey –

The Beaver Varsity Field Hockey team started off their season with a loss against Worcester Academy, with a final score of 4-1. Annabelle Fulton ’18 scored her first career goal for Beaver field hockey. On Saturday Beaver put up a hard fight against Portsmouth Abbey but unfortunately were unable to finish in net, and ended up losing 5-1. The field hockey team continues to progress at practice and is looking forward to the upcoming week, where they face Pingree School and LCA Wednesday and Friday.

Varsity Volleyball – 

Varsity Volleyball opened the season this past week with a 3-0 win over Gann Academy. The match was dominated by the excellent play of two senior setters, Allison Randall ’15 and captain Nancy Kacupaj ’15. Allison led the team in kills with 9. Nancy took control of the game from the first whistle with consistently excellent serving which accounted for 8 of the teams 17 aces. On Saturday, the team fell to Middlesex by a score of 3-1. This week the girls will travel to Pingree on Wednesday and then host LCA on Friday.
