Winter Athletics 2015-16: Early December recap

Boys Varsity Basketball
On December 7, Boys Varsity Basketball took on Bancroft for their first game of the year. Sophomore Shandon Brown led the team to a 81-49 victory with a 29 point outing, connecting on five three pointers. The boys then traveled to Concord Academy for an 83-33 win. Junior Nate Freeman led the team in scoring with 19 points, he made 5 three pointers. The team advanced to 3-0 after traveling to Southboro to take on a tough St. Mark’s team. Senior PJ Tucker had a great performance leading the team with 18 points in the 65-50 win. The boys then played three games in the annual Rivers Tournament. To open the tournament Kevin Scarlett, Javon Taylor, and Shandon Brown all scored in double figures to lead the team to a 52-44 victory over Holderness. The next day, Shandon Brown scored 25 points, connecting on 5 three pointers to lead the team to a  53-40 victory over BB&N. The boys then played Rivers in a hard fought battle but came out victorious with 73-70 win in the championship game.  The charge was lead by Senior Kevin Scarlett who had an outstanding performance with 25 points, 19 of them coming in the second half.

Girls Varsity Basketball
The Girls Varsity Basketball team opened up their season with a 51-33 victory over Groton. Sophomore Maddie Mullen had a team high 32 points. The girls had a 9-0 run at the end of the first half to give them a lead and did not look back from there after a great defensive effort in the second half. After back to back losses to Lincoln and Pingree GVBB bounced back with a 44-34 win at home over Newton Country Day after a great overall team effort. Freshman Amanda Altman produced in the post to help secure the win. Beaver followed up a strong effort with a quality 53-33 win on the road over Berwick. Maddie Mullen led all scorers with 27. Freshman Amanda Altman and Nicole Katz had breakout performances as well.

Girls Varsity Ice Hockey
The Girls Varsity Ice Hockey team started their season with a high scoring 12-7 loss to Winsor School. Corinne Downey had a hat trick to lead the team in scoring. Julia Gatewood had 2 goals and Remi Shore and Sydney Brown each tallied a goal as well. In their second game, Vida Bailey had 28 saves in a loss to Portsmouth Abbey.

Squash
The Squash team opened their season with a loss to Concord Academy. Flora DiCara and Michael Schaff came within two points of winning games, while Justin Calka, Annabelle Fulton, Max Morelli, and Julia Frangioni played two matches each.  The team then took on Belmont Hill as Flora DiCara and Ian Von Schroeter both took a couple games to the wire. The team then closed out its opening stretch of matches taking on Squashbusters. Ian Von Schroeter got his first win of the year at #1, and Justin Calka won at #3 for the second time in two weeks.

Boys JV Basketball
Boys JV Basketball started their season with a commanding 67-16 win over Bancroft. It was truly a great team win as the team had control of the game from the get go. The team then traveled to Concord Academy where they left victorious after a 38-25 win. The team overcame a slow first half. Jake Cowen-Whitman and Nick Verdi lead all scorers with 10 points a piece.

Girls JV Basketball
Girls JV Basketball started the season with back to back games. The first being a loss to Newton Country Day School. The team had a slow first half but they battled back in the second half and played evenly with NCDS for the rest of the game. Clare Eberman (Captain), Malena Horne, and Grace Saltonstall led the team in scoring with 4 points a piece. The second game was a competitive contest against Gann Academy. Co-Captain Claire Eberman dominated the paint and finished as the game’s leading scorer with 8 points. Despite being down most of the game, Beaver never eased up on defense and started getting fast break scoring opportunities late in the game.

Boy Ice Hockey
The Beaver Boys Ice Hockey team has competed very well in their inaugural season. Their first game was a 3-0 loss to Portsmouth Abbey. It was an all around solid team effort.
