Overview

Diversity and multiculturalism are central to the school’s curriculum, special programs, admission and hiring policies and professional development. Our mission statement charges us with teaching students “to act effectively within a genuinely diverse cultural and social framework.” In 2000 the Board of Trustees published its Statement on Diversity.

With approximately 26% students of color, 26% receiving financial aid, and 20% faculty of color, as well as a wide range of family structures, languages spoken at home, and cultures of origin, the BCDS community is authentically diverse, a fact that sets us apart from many of our independent school peers.

Helping to support these efforts are:

  • The Diversity Leadership Team, consisting of upper and middle school faculty, which provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning towards building an inclusive school community. Beaver is working towards integrating multicultural competencies articulated by the DLT into our curriculum and instructional practices.

  • The Parents’ Association Diversity Subcommittee works to develop a forum for conversations around issues of diversity in education and to support diversity- related programs and events at Beaver.

Understanding our community and the world at large is an ongoing process at BCDS. Maintaining a diverse school community is just one part of that process. Most importantly, through multicultural education, BCDS hopes to produce students committed to working towards a more just society.

We value diversity as one of the benefits of life in the U.S. and we consider education about human differences to be essential to the healthy development of a well-educated person.
