Special Events & Programs

Unity Day: An annual all-school event. Past programs included: symposium on gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender issues, gender roles of men and women in society, the intersection of spirituality, religion, and culture. Unity Day 2007 will explore the variety of family structures in conjunction with the “Love Makes a Family” exhibit.

Social Action Day: an annual event that brings in community leaders to speak and give workshops with students on social issues.

Student of Color Achievement Workshop: afternoon of seminars followed by a family potluck supper.

Guest Speakers, Visiting Artists and Performers expose students to different political and cultural perspectives. In April 2007 Kevin Jennings, founder and executive director of GLSEN, spoke to parents and all students.

Community Service is a graduation requirement for all students (40 hours minimum). Students can receive afternoon activity credit for participating in the school’s service program as an alternative to sports or drama. The school organizes several community services trips over school breaks and weekends. In 2007 students worked in Kenya and NYC. In 2006 a group went to New Orleans to help with hurricane relief.

Asian Night: a student-organized program of Asian-themed entertainment and food. Photos of Asian Night 2007 are in the Multimedia Gallery under School Life/School Events 2006-07.

Winter Holidays Celebration brings the community together to share their religious and cultural traditions.

Potluck Suppers for families of color and LGBT families.

Students/People of Color Conferences: BCDS students and faculty attend the annual NAIS conferences. Photos of SOCC 2007 are in the Multimedia Gallery under School Life/School Events 2006-07.
