At BCDS, we want our students and their families to feel informed and empowered so they can actually enjoy the college search. Our goal is to help students identify and apply to colleges that offer opportunities and challenges that match their individual aspirations, needs, and interests.
The College Counseling office offers students and families advice and support as students pass through this important life transition. Our job is to help open up the world of possibilities to students as they explore their college options. Deciding which colleges are most appropriate can be tied to many factors: academic atmosphere, geographic location, diversity of the student body, athletic teams, arts offerings, extracurricular and internship opportunities, overseas studies programs, and financial aid. BCDS college counselors help students sort through these considerations, and then we help students prepare thorough and compelling applications.
Beginning in the junior year, students meet with BCDS college counselors individually and in small groups to review a variety of topics, including
• Using the Internet to research and apply to colleges;
• Registering for standardized tests;
• Understanding the application process;
• Tips on how to make the most of the college visit and interview;
• Writing an application that best represents the student;
• Writing a strong essay; and
• Understanding the financial aid process.
In addition to the resources included on the "Resources" page in this section, BCDS families beginning the college process are given accounts to the special Naviance Family Connection service that offers student-specific college search materials.
