BCDS offers an academically challenging curriculum in an environment that promotes balance in students’ lives. Moving beyond the mastery facts, our curriculum is designed to make students think deeply and critically and to inspire them, working individually and collaboratively, to make connections across disciplines, culture, and time. We maintain high subject-matter standards and academic expectations to prepare our graduates for college, and beyond. Our small classes (averaging 12-14) and close community (420 students in grades 6-12) foster an unmatched degree of teacher-student mentoring. All our teachers are trained in progressive pedagogical techniques that help them address the individual strengths of each student.

BCDS was one of the nation’s first progressive schools and remains at the forefront of the movement almost a century later. Progressive education is a combination of educational practice and philosophy that was originally based on the ideas of John Dewey and others. In the present era, progressive education is characterized by a student-centered approach to learning.
