Co-curricular courses meet two days in a seven-day schedule and run for one trimester per year. Physical Education meets three days in the seven-day rotation throughout the school year. (Middle school students have additional opportunities to exercise daily through the afternoon program in which they may choose to play a team sport.)
Computer Applications (Grades 6 & 7)
Computer technology classes are designed to improve students’ understanding of the world of computers by exposing students to a variety of computer applications. The class involves individual hands-on projects with the goal of teaching students to become proficient with graphing using Microsoft Excel, keyboarding, using the Internet effectively and efficiently, word processing via Microsoft Word, creating presentations in Microsoft PowerPoint, and scanning images. These applications will enhance the students’ knowledge of general computer applications, and the skills learned can be used in other disciplines.
Health and Body Image (Grade 6)
This course is led by a Massachusetts Eating Disorders Association (MEDA) staff person. Its focus is on the development of healthy body image, self-esteem and nutrition. In gender-separate classes, students discover the ways in which the media influences body image, examine and learn how to manage other social pressures that affect self-esteem, and gain knowledge about proper nutrition and exercise.
Human Sexuality and Relationships (Grade 7)
This gender-separate discussion and presentation-based class provides information about sexuality and relationships in the context of caring for oneself and others. In addition to information about basic human anatomy and puberty, topics covered include the influence of the media, gender issues, and peer pressure. The class is conducted in a supportive atmosphere in which students may ask questions that concern them.
Physical Education (Grades 6-8)
Middle school physical education classes are designed to build trust, group interactions, and problem-solving, as well as provide instruction in skills and techniques utilized in team and individual sports. Twice a year fitness testing is conducted, giving the students an opportunity to monitor their progress.
